Description
Basic settings of the software, how to observe, load and work with basic useful oceanographic data.
one. Before we start - Folder structure
The side by side sessions in this course consists of a series of applied exercises where y'all will download data for a selected area of interest and generate products.
It is recommended to take a proper folder construction to organize your files.
Create a general-purpose data collection folder structure for the selected marine area to be used for grade exercises. Start with the PROJECTS folder and so the LIBERIA folder (Liberia volition exist the region of interest for all our exercises). You tin can repeat the folder structure for your own region of interest. For example:
PROJECTS
LIBERIA - Project files for this expanse
Information - Detailed information about any of these datasets, almost always in a carefully controlled format
BASEMAP
BORDERS - Shapes for mapping
RELIEF - Bathymetry and topography
Bounding main
WOD - Globe Body of water Database
WOA - World Ocean Atlas
[OTHER SOURCES] - Separate folders identified by acronyms are optional hither depending on your preferences
PRODUCTS - Files created by the following main programs
IDV - Maps and syntheses made by Integrated Data Viewer: synthesis program for many operational datasets and some GIS objects
ODV - Collections and their products made with Bounding main Information View; our primary bounding main station data management, analysis and display tool
COLLECTIONS - Individual collections of data past data blazon, area or other original selection criteria
IMAGES - Saved images of graphics
INTERPOLATIONS - XYZ data triplets exported from ODV'south "surface style" analyses; could as well be called grids, because they are derived from grid-similar interpolation schemes
SUBSETS - Spreadsheets of data taken from larger collections, based on temporal, spatial or other station or sample criteria; can besides be a completely new collection extracted from the parent collection
TIMESERIES - Data analyses based mainly on data/time, not geographic location
SAGA - Grids and vector products made by our "workhorse" public domain GIS programme
AUXILIARY - Saved settings (backdrop files) for the display of shapes or grids, and other like helper files
GEOIMAGES - Geo-referenced images, using either globe files or KML/KMZ for positioning; includes also TIFF grid rasters (for WMS utilise only)
GRIDS - grids in Saga format, including template grids
PROJECTS - A special sort of file that contains lists of objects to identify in ane map, including the display properties of the objects
TABLES - tabular data from within shapes, and as well created alongside them for display direction
VECTORS - points, lines, contours, polygons, graticules, current of air arrows, current arrows; all equally either ESRI shapes or Google KML/KMZ
To make things easier, create the Liberia binder and copy the file MAKEFOLDERS.bat into information technology. Double click it.
(for MAC users, copy this file insteadmakefolders.control)
2. Adding World Borders shapefile
This basic exercise may be your start introduction to Geographic Data Systems (GIS). Take the time to explore the Saga website (http://world wide web.saga-gis.org/) and feel free to experiment with whatever GIS data you lot may already have. The do uses the most common type of GIS data, a vector layer consisting of state borders.
This do was based on Creating a project map in Saga (from marinedataliteracy.org).
| i - Download the world borders zipfile (TM_WORLD_BORDERS-0.iii.cipher) by thematicmapping here, and save it to the folder DATA > BASEMAP > BORDERS. Then unzip it in place. | |
| ii. Run Saga. Then select FILE > SHAPES > LOAD SHAPES, and navigate to the earth borders dataset and open up information technology. | |
| iii. The loaded data object, will appear in the workspace, in the data tree. Notice that it is classified every bit a polygon shape. Right-click on the object, and select ADD TO MAP. | |
| 4. This map appears. You can size it notwithstanding you want, by dragging a corner outward or inward. | |
| 5. The aspect table can be examined to run across what data is available about the physical features that have been drawn. To see the table, right-click on the information object, and select ATTRIBUTES > SHOW Tabular array | |
| 6. At present y'all can run across the contents of the attributes table. These columns have cryptic labels, but a little inquiry tin yield these explanations: FIPS - A Usa government code system for land names ISO2 and ISO3 - The International Organisation for Standards two- and three-letter code systems to identify countries Un - The Un codes for the countries Region and Subregion - Subdivisions from the UN system Lat and Lon - Geographic coordinates of the state's centroid (for labeling purposes) To notice Republic of liberia (which isn't easy to find in this long table), right click on the characterization row, and select SORT FIELDS. | |
| 7. When this window appears, select SORT Offset BY Un, and go out the 2nd and 3rd choices empty. And then click OK. | |
| 8. Now y'all can hands observe Republic of liberia alphabetically. | |
| ix. If y'all await very carefully, you can see that the tape selected in the table is shown as cherry-red/yellow in the map, to help you locate it. Returning to the map interface, let'southward zoom in to take a improve picture of Republic of liberia. Click and drag centering Liberia on your map. | |
| 10. Changing the cursor to Activeness pointer, y'all are able to select a polygon. Check the Attributes tab in the properties window to visualize attributes referred to such polygon. You tin can shut the attributes table now. Click with the right button on the map and "Clear Option". | |
| eleven. In the properties window, select OPTIONS > COLORS > Type > GRADUATED COLOR | |
| 12. For Scaling, select Attribute UN to specify that the coloring will exist according to the Un lawmaking numbers. Then, click COLORS, and a small control showing 3 DOTS (called an ellipsis) appears. Click the ellipsis. | |
| 13. To select a larger number of colors, click on COUNT, and set it to l. Then click OK. NOTE: 50 is arbitrary. Try values from 5 to 150 to run into what result it has. | |
| 14. To use a colorful palette, click on PRESETS, and select RAINBOW. Then click OK. Click OK again to close the COLORS window. Note: The RANDOM color set would also be a good choice, because the numerical values of the attribute UN aren't scientifically of import. | |
| xv. Now to make these changes effective, you must click SETTINGS-APPLY at the bottom of the console. | |
| 16. Now you tin see each state with a separate color. | |
| 17. At present we need to begin finalizing and saving our project map. Start, at the pinnacle of the backdrop window change the proper name to World Borders. Then at the lesser click SETTINGS > APPLY | |
| eighteen. This changes the display name in the workspace. | |
| 19. Now, we need to relieve this project, and then nosotros can re-draw it quickly. Select FILE > Projection > SAVE PROJECT As, then navigate to PRODUCTS > SAGA > PROJECTS and enter the proper noun Liberia.sprj (stands for Saga Projection). | |
3. Calculation Exclusive Economic Zone shapefile
| 1. Marine Regions is an integration of the VLIMAR Gazetteer and the VLIZ Maritime Boundaries Geodatabase. The purpose of Marine Regions is to create a standard, relational list of geographic names, coupled with information and maps of the geographic location of maritime features. Access http://www.marineregions.org/ Forth the acme margin you'll come across these 5 tabs to access the information. None of these "views" of the data are unique, and there is considerable overlap betwixt them; these portals simply provide easier, thematic access. | |
| 2. Get to the Downloads tab. Here, yous will find shapefiles of major global datasets; overlaps with other categories. Open up the first particular "Maritime Boundaries v10" and click in download. | |
| iii. Fill up the necessary data | |
| 4. Salvage the World_EEZ_v10_20180221.aught file in LIBERIA>Data>BASEMAP>BORDERS and unzip it. | |
| 5. The folder will contain these files: eez_boundaries_v10 - Lines shapes of the seaward boundaries of national claims. eez_v10 - Polygon shapes of the EEZ'due south for each country. Hither's a map of the two datasets, showing the departure | |
| 6. Load both files into Liberia.sprj project. FILE>SHAPES>LOAD and navigate to your BORDERS folder. Select both .shp files. Click Open up | |
| 7. Rename these two layers and then you lot immediately recognized contours (shape line) from areas (shape polygons). Note SAGA organizes each shape type in a node | |
| 8. Nosotros volition use these to explore SAGA settings a little scrap more than. Create a map with the 3 layers y'all have in your project then far - World borders - EEZ areas - EEZ contours To add two or more layers on same map, double click (or correct click -> add to map) on the layer you lot wish to add and chose the existing map. Note the map is named after the first layer you added. | |
| 9. Switch to the Maps tab at Manager window. On the Manager window (left), you tin can see the order of the layers in your map. Hither, from peak to lesser - 1) EEZ contours, - 2) EEZ areas, - three) Globe Borders On the Properties window (right), settings of the selected object. | |
| 10. To change lodge of layers, you can click and (up/down) drag one layer or right click on layer -> Move ... Note that top layers hide features of bottom layers. | |
| 11. To remove a layer from a map, correct click on layer -> close. Alternatively, you can simply switch on/off (without removing the layer), right click on layer -> (un)check Show layer. Off layers are indicated with brackets | |
| 12. To change settings of a specific layer, highlight such layer on Manager window and edit Settings at Backdrop window. Don't forget to click Utilise at the bottom to brand these changes effective. Experiment these on your layers. Notation the alterations will be applied to the layer in all maps it is or will exist added. | |
| thirteen. A map tin exist switched on/off in the same manner every bit a layer (right click on map name-> (un) check Show map). To close/delete a map, right click on map name -> Close. If you "close" a map clicking on its top right X push, information technology is switched off (i.due east., it is still at the Map tree and tin be recovered). It is always a good practice to keep your working area and project clean and organized. Rename maps and layers for quick recognition and close unnecessary maps before saving your project. Save the Republic of liberia.sprj project. | |
| Other useful data (e.g countries administratives boundaries) and related exercises can exist institute at http://marinedataliteracy.org/margis/marzones/marine_zones.htm and http://marinedataliteracy.org/margis/bounds/bounds_coast.htm | |
4. Adding World Sea Atlas shapefile
| 1. The World Bounding main Atlas (WOA) is a data product of the Ocean Climate Laboratory of the National Oceanographic Data Center (U.S.). The WOA consists of statistical and objectively analyzed climatological fields of in situ ocean backdrop for the World Ocean: - Temperature - Salinity - Density - Conductivity - Dissolved Oxygen - Percent Oxygen Saturation - Credible Oxygen Utilization - Silicate - Phosphate - Nitrate WOA was outset produced in 1994 (based on the before Climatological Atlas of the World Ocean), with after editions at roughly four twelvemonth intervals in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2018. Annotation: Currently, WOA 2018 has a prerelease status (just Temperature and Salinity available) | |
| 2. Access the NODC website and click on World Ocean Atlas. Select the WOA18 data link. Select the Temperature link. Information | |
| iii. Here you will notice basic information on data and metadata, different formats, grids, statistics and temporal averages. Select the following: Available format: ArcGIS Available grids: one/ivo Available decadal periods: Averaged decades Click Update data links | |
| 4. Cull t00mn04_shape.tar.gz (almanac statistical mean data links). Re-create the file to Information>OCEAN>WOA and unzip it in place. You volition find 3 files (.dbf,.shp and .shx) named woa18_decav_t00mn04.***. Rename them as temp_annual_woa.*** Make certain all have the exactly same name | |
| 5. Load the shapefile into Saga. It is a large dataset, and then information technology can take a while. Annotation a new node on the Data tree. This is a Signal shape file. Open it in a NEW MAP to show the temperature points. | |
| vi. Change the cursor to ACTION (assuming black pointer) and click in whatsoever of the points. Wait at the Attributes tab (Properties window). Each point has a temperature value for standard depths from surface upwardly to 5500 m). To unselect points: click on map -> articulate choice | |
| seven. Return to Settings tab at Properties window - uncheck OUTLINE - COLORS > TYPE > GRADUATED COLORS. Then open the drib-downward carte du jour beside ATTRIBUTE. Select SURFACE. - Value Range > Conform the minimum to 0(oC). Then click SETTINGS > Utilise. | |
| eight. Now you can come across the colors for the assay. Information technology is rather crude looking. | |
| 9. Render to Settings tab at Backdrop window - At SIZE, modify Default Size to 1 - Use the Color control to gear up 100 colors and the PRESET > RAINBOW palette. Don't forget the Apply push. | |
| x. Nosotros can visualize and maximize the employ of color-temperature range, investigating the data histogram. Right click on layer -> Histogram | |
| 11. Temperature values concentrate between 0 and 30.35oC. Nosotros tin utilize these as max and min range by typing it at the Scaling value range (Settings tab) or click close to the 0 and drag the cursor up to the xxx.35 value (on the Histogram). | |
| 12. Add the layers World Borders and EEZ areas to this new map. Here, the transparency of EEZ areas layer is ready at 50% | |
| xiii. Explore the settings, alter the depth if you wish.. Once you're happy with your map, save it as an epitome. Go to the main bill of fare -> MAP -> Save as Epitome… | |
| xiv. Save it into binder PRODUCTS/SAGA/GEOIMAGES. Name the epitome AnnualTemp_Surface_WOA. Cull *.png file format and Save | |
| 15. When y'all click SAVE, then these options appear: For map WIDTH and HEIGHT, you lot can have the defaults. Experiment with different choices to see how it affects the terminal effigy in Google For FRAME WIDTH the author recommends 0. Endeavour other values. Check Salve GEOREFERENCE; this insures you'll have a PGW world file with the main PNG file. Cheque Save KML FILE Cheque Legend > Salvage For ZOOM you can use one in this example. After, in Panel 21 you'll see the size of the legend itself. If it'south as well pocket-sized, y'all can cull a larger value right hither. | |
| 16. Now you take these four new files: - The KML file - The georeferenced prototype: PNG, PGW - The legend: also PNG | |
| 17. If you double-click the KML file , it will open up in Google Globe like this: | |
| 18. Until now, it was necessary to trim the white background away with a graphics editor, such every bit Paint.net or IrfanView, as yous meet here. Nosotros have contacted SAGA team and they volition include an option for a transparent groundwork on the next version (to be released in Dec 2018). | |
| 19. Panels fifteen-23 in this MDL exercise provide the instructions to include the legend on GE. | |
5. Cutting shapefiles into AOI
| ane. Then far we are working with global data, merely as you may accept noted, these, incredible heavy datasets are not necessary in example you are working regionally. Nosotros will larn now how to cut these iii shapefiles (Temp_Annual_WOA – Points; EEZ contours – Lines; World Borders – Polygons) for our Area of Interest (AOI). Our AOI is Liberia, defined by the bounding box: Superlative (latitude): 9o Due north Lesser (breadth): 6o S Left (longitude): 23o W Right (longitude): 3o W | |
| 2. First, frames (or graticules) must be created. Frames tin be used for many purposes, especially to create a visual border around a specific AOI. They likewise give yous a digital object that can be used for cutting or trimming datasets. You should make and go along a pocket-size library of these shapes for future apply. These utility objects are required for information analyses and presentations in the exercises in the next department. | |
| three. In the Manager window, get to tab TOOLS. Shapes->Tools-> Create Graticule | |
| 4. Chose the following: - Graticule: Create - Extent: Not Ready - Type: Lines - Width: -23 (westernmost AOI) ;-3 (easternmost AOI) - Height: -6 (southernmost AOI) ;+nine (northernmost AOI) - Partitioning Width: twenty (difference between -23 and -3) - Division Height: 15 (difference between -6 and 9) | |
| 5. On the data tab yous will find a new line shape named Graticule. This is how it looks like on your map: | |
| 6. Rename information technology to Frame_Liberia_Line | |
| 7. Save the new file in PRODUCTS-> SAGA-> VECTORS with the proper name Frame_Liberia_Line.shp | |
| eight. Now, create a graticule type RECTANGLES. Shapes->Tools-> Create Graticule Use same information as panel iv, but change Type to Rectangles. Also, make sure Graticule is set in <create>, otherwise SAGA overwrites the concluding layer created. | |
| 9. Rename the new graticule to Frame_Liberia_Polygon. This is how it looks: Save the shape in PRODUCTS-> SAGA-> VECTORS with the name Frame_Liberia_Polygon.shp At present we have the "cookie cutters" nosotros need to trimm our global shapefiles for our AOI. | |
| 10. METHOD ane: CUT POINT SHAPE | |
| eleven. Back on the TOOLS tab Shapes -> Tools -> Re-create Shapes from Region | |
| 12. For Shapes, click in No Objects and an ellipsis (...) will appear. Here is a choice of shapes to cut. Select temp_ annual_woa. Then click > to move it to the right side. Click OK. | |
| thirteen. At present for METHOD select INTERSECTS. And for REGION choose SHAPES LAYER EXTEND. Then click OK. | |
| 14. This habilitates a second SHAPES option. Select the Frame_Liberia_Lines shapefile. So click ok. | |
| 15. A new point shape appears on Data tab with the name temp_ annual_woa[Cut] | |
| 16. If you Add together TO A NEW MAP with the new shape, it looks like this. The Colour control has been used to set 100 colors in a RAINBOW palette. The temperature range, for your information, is roughly 25-28 deg C. | |
| 17. Rename the new point shape "temp_liberia_annual_woa_saga" and use Salve AS to navigate to PRODUCTS > SAGA > VECTORS to save information technology with the aforementioned name. You also may shut the original global WOA data and save the project. | |
| 18. METHOD 2: CUT LINE SHAPE | |
| xix. On Tools tab Select SHAPES>LINES > LINE-POLYGON INTERSECTION.For LINES select the EEZ contours shape. For POLYGON, select the Frame_Liberia_Polygon shape. So click OK. | |
| 20. SAGA creates ii line shapes : - EEZ contours [Difference: Frame_Liberia_Polygon] - EEZ contours [Intersection: Frame_Liberia_Polygon] | |
| 21. Hither' what they look like: | |
| 22. Rename EEZ contours [Intersection: Frame_Liberia_Polygon] to EEZ_contour_Liberia_saga and Salve Every bit PRODUCTS- > SAGA- > VECTORS with the same proper name. You besides may close the original global EEZ contours and the EEZ contours [Deviation: Frame_Liberia_Polygon] data. Save the project. | |
| 23. METHOD 3: CUT POLYGON SHAPE | |
| 24. This is the full general surface area of Republic of liberia in the shape World Borders. | |
| 25. Select SHAPES->POLYGONS- > POLYGON PARTS TO Carve up POLYGONS. For POLYGON, select the Earth Borders. For POLYGON PARTS, select CREATE. Cheque Lakes Then click OK. NOTE: This cleanup-step is needed to permit completely divide treatment of all national polygons, avoiding physical ties between polygons within and outside the desired map. | |
| 26. At present nosotros must separate the polygons along the border of the Liberia area into split up smaller polygons that are either inside the Republic of liberia frame or outside. Select SHAPES-> POLYGONS- > POLYGON-LINE INTERSECTION. For the POLYGON, select Globe Borders [PARTS]. Then for the LINE, select Frame_Liberia_Line. And then click OK. | |
| 27. A new shape appears: World Borders [Parts] [Intersection: Frame_Liberia_Line] Here's the new polygon. Y'all can encounter that several countries in the Republic of liberia expanse have been cut into carve up parts. The right-angle is not a simple line shape, information technology is the boundary between the newly separated shapes. There are at to the lowest degree v distinctly separate polygons south-west of the right-angle line. | |
| 28. Now cut out shape World Borders [Parts] [Intersection: Frame_Liberia_Line] using the Frame_Liberia_Lines shape, exactly equally y'all did above in Panels 11-14. | |
| 29. And hither are the 5 polygons that survive the cutting process. Notation: Examine closely to see if in that location are any "missing countries". | |
| xxx. Rename this new shape every bit map_Liberia_world_borders_SAGA and Save AS PRODUCTS- > SAGA- > VECTORS with the same name. You may close the global Globe Border and the Polygons [Parts]. Save the projection | |
| 31. Here'south a map assembling our new shape files for Liberia in GE | |
| This exercise was based in the lesson Cut a Shape to the Project Map Extent in Saga (from marinedataliteracy.org) | |
